Malabar Pit Viper (Trimeresurus malabaricus)

This venomous snake is endemic to the Western Ghats. Mostly nocturnal, this snake’s camouflage makes it difficult to spot one in the rainforest. They are active in the monsoons, though one rarely ever encounters them after that. There are 4 known colour morphs of this snake:

  • Green
  • Brown¬†(pictured here)
  • Yellow
  • Orange (very rare)

Pictured in this photograph is the wonderful pattern on the prehensile tail of this snake.

Photographed in Agumbe in June 2011
